About Tropiplants

We sell tropical fruit plants that fruit for people who do not own a grove.

Why this exists

Most people who try to grow tropical fruit at home fail on the first plant, and it is usually not their fault. They were sold an unrooted cutting, or a variety that needs twenty feet of vertical space, or something that will not fruit for eight years — with a care card that said "water regularly" and nothing else.

Tropiplants exists to remove those three failure modes. Every plant in our catalog is chosen because it fruits reasonably young, stays a size a normal person can manage, and ships as an established plant with a real root system.

What we will not do

  • Sell you a stick. Everything ships rooted and established. You are not gambling on propagation.
  • Overstate time to fruit. Jaboticaba takes four to six years. We say so on the page. If a plant is slow, you will know before you buy it.
  • Ship into weather that will kill it. We hold orders during hard freezes and heat waves and email you rather than roll the dice.
  • Argue about a dead plant. Photo within 48 hours, replacement or refund, no return shipping.

How we pick varieties

Three filters. Does it fruit within a few years? Can it be kept at a manageable size, ideally in a container? And is the fruit meaningfully better than what you can buy at a supermarket?

That last one rules out a surprising amount. There is no point growing a plant for two years to get something you could have bought for three dollars. But a Sugarloaf pineapple, or a Blue Java banana, or a Physical Graffiti dragon fruit — those you genuinely cannot buy, because they do not survive commercial shipping. Growing your own is the only way to eat them.

Talk to us

This is a small operation. Emails go to a person, and that person answers them — usually the same day, including growing questions from people who have not bought anything.
